Jeff Hanneman, guitarist and songwriter for thrash band Slayer, passed away on May 2, 2013 at the age of 49. A founding member of Slayer, Hanneman was instrumental in writing some of the group’s biggest hits, including “Seasons in the Abyss,” “South of Heaven,” and their biggest seller, “Raining Blood” off the album Reign in Blood.

In 2011 Hanneman contracted necrotizing fascitis, a flesh-eating disease, which prevented him from performing on recent Slayer tours. He died from liver failure on Thursday. The guitarist was honored with a “moment of noise” led by fellow Slayer guitarist, Kerry King, at the Revolver magazine Golden Gods awards show that night. Our condolences to his family, friends, and fans.
