SG

The SG, or Gibson SG, is an iconic solidbody electric guitar introduced by Gibson in 1961, and still in production and popular today. In 1960, the Gibson Les Paul was declining in sales, so Gibson reimagined the instrument. The new model (still known as a Les Paul through 1963, when it was renamed the “SG,” which stood for “Solid Guitar”) was thinner, with a solid mahogany double-cutaway body (no carved maple top), better access to the higher frets, two humbucking pickups, and a thinner neck profile. Famous players such as Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Elliot Easton of The Cars, and Angus Young of AC/DC were among the many who favor SGs. A number of variant models have been offered, including the SG Jr., SG Special, SG Standard, SG Custom, and more.
