Runout

“Runout” refers to the orientation of a sawn piece of wood in relation to the axis of the tree. If the lumber is not cut parallel to the tree axis, or if there is a twist in the lumber, the longitudinal fibers of wood will run off the face of the board. Runout in a guitar top can be hard to spot, but it can make a difference to the strength of the wood.
