Thanks for the question Hugh! First of all, there is no right or wrong answer to this one, it really depends on what you are going for sound-wise. In general, here are a few thoughts:
- It is generally best to have compressors first in the chain. This way your signal is nice and strong for subsequent effects, and you aren’t messing with the dynamics of reverbs and delays later in the chain.
- If you want more "intense" effects, put distortion devices early in the chain. Chorus, flange, wah and others really go to town on distorted signals… keep in mind that a distortion or overdrive can greatly increase signal level, potentially overloading effects later in the chain.
- Putting distortion after other effects will tend to wash them out, or smooth them a bit. The effect is more similar to running stomp boxes into a distorted amp.
- Reverb and delay tend to work better later in the chain, if not last. Putting time delay devices early in the chain will be washier, and diminishes clarity.
Hope these suggestions help in your search for the ultimate guitar tone!
