A note or sound with a duration that equals 1/4 of a whole note (assuming duple meter). In time signatures with a “4” denominator, the quarter note represents one beat in a measure. In standard Western music notation, a quarter note is represented by a black (filled in) oval note head with a vertical stem with no flag. In tablature, a quarter note is represented by a number on a line (indicating the fret and string of the instrument) and a vertical stem with no flag.
