In music a measure is a rhythmic grouping of notes (and/or rests) that is consistent with or related to the meter or time signature in place at that point in the piece. Measures are denoted and separated by bar lines in written music. For instance, in a 4/4 time signature, the time values of the notes between two bar lines will add up to four beats. Measures are sometimes referred to as bars, and in this context the two terms are largely synonymous.
