Putting Humbuckers on a Strat

Q: I have a new Stratocaster I love, but I think I want to put two humbuckers in it instead of the three single-coil pickups. I have no woodworking skills, will I have trouble?

A: You may be in luck: most new Fender Stratocasters come from the factory routed for humbuckers in the bridge and neck positions (even though most are fitted with single-coils as stock). It’s easy to check. Just remove the strings, then remove the screws that hold the pickguard in place. You’ll immediately be able to see if the pickup cavities are routed for single-coils or the larger humbuckers.

The switchout is also straight-ahead. Replacement pickguards are readily available pre-cut for humbuckers. Just mount your pickups and controls on the new pickguard, and install it in place of the old one. Really all that is required is basic soldering skill.

Of course, if you have any doubt, take the guitar to a qualified technician and have them do the mod for you.
