Programming effects for expansion board sounds in Yamaha keyboards

“How do I apply some different effects to one of the sounds coming off of an expansion board in my Yamaha S80?”

The following information applies to a number of Yamaha instruments, though the exact key presses may be slightly different on some.

There are two types of Effects that can be applied to a sound on a plug-in Board; ‘System Effects’ are found on the unit the Board is plugged into (the S80 in this case), and the ‘Insertion Effects’ that the Board uses are found on the expansion Board itself. These Effects Units contain the following Effects:
– Reverb Unit (System): 12 Reverbs
Chorus Unit (System): 23 Chorus-type Effects
– Insertion Effect Unit (on the Plug-in Board): Up to 24 effects, depending on the Board

The PRE1, PRE2, INT, and EXT Voices (resident on the S80) use their own Insertion Effects (Insertion Effect 1 and 2) and are assigned in a different manner.

Using the Insertion Effect with a Plug-in Voice:

1) Press the Voice button to enter Voice Mode, and select a Plug-in Voice.
2) Press the Edit button.
3) Press and hold the Shift button, then turn the Page knob until the cursor points to ‘EFF’ at the upper right of the screen.
4) Release the Shift button, then turn the Page knob until ‘ EFF EF1’ is displayed on the left side of the screen.
TIP: For steps 5 – 6, refer to the Effects List in the Plug-in Board Owner’s Manual, which contains detailed information on each Effect.)
5) Turn the “B” knob to select an Insertion Effect Category.
6) Turn the “C” knob to select an Insertion Effect Type.
7) If applicable, turn the “1” knob to select the Dry/Wet mix (balance).
TIP: Pressing the Enter button will allow the user to edit additional Effect parameters.

Using System Effects with an expanded sound:

1) Turn the Page knob until ‘EFF Rev’ is displayed in the screen.
2) Turn the “B” knob to select the Reverb Type.
3) Turn the “1” knob to set the Reverb Return Level.
TIP: Pressing the Enter button will allow you to edit additional Effect parameters.
4) Turn the Page knob until ‘EFF Cho’ is displayed in the screen.
5) Turn the “B” knob to select the Chorus Type.
6) Turn the “C” knob to set the level of Chorus sent to the Reverb.
7) Turn the “1” knob to set the Chorus Return Level.
TIP: Pressing the Enter button will allow the user to edit additional Effect parameters.
