A synonym for “phase shifter.” A phaser is an effect common in guitar stompboxes and multieffects processors. A phaser uses phase modulation in order to create swooping and “jet airplane” sounding effects, somewhat similar to a flanger, though the effect is created using all-pass filters rather than time delay. Many famous and influential guitar players are known for their use of phasers, such as Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, and many others.
