Pedal Point

This is a musical technique where a bass note (usually the tonic or dominant) is held through a passage that includes chords that do not include the bass note. Just one example is found in the closing bars of Bach’s “Prelude in C” from The Well-Tempered Clavier. If two different bass notes are held, this is called a Double Pedal.
