“How do I make my mono guitar track sound big and full while panning it mostly to one side to make room for other instruments in the mix? I don’t enjoy chorus or most effects on my guitar. I want it to sound dry.”
There are a few ways to accomplish this (listen to Van Halen’s first album). One of the more common methods is to employ what is known as the Haas Effect. Pan your guitar track to the side you want. Run its signal through a good delay unit and bring that signal back into your board panned just as far in the opposite direction of the guitar track and at the same level. The delay should be set to 100% wet with no repeats. Slowly change the delay time from about 5 milliseconds up to about 25 milliseconds. You will hear the guitar image move more in the direction of the original track as the delay time increases, yet there will still be ample guitar in the other (delayed) channel. It will sound really big and full overall, but not effected sounding. Experiment with the delay time and level to dial in exactly what you want.
