In MIDI each note is assigned a number. Note numbers range from 0 to 127. “Middle C” is note number 60. In the language of MIDI the note number is contained in one of two data bytes that follow the Note On status byte (the second data byte is for the velocity of the note). Many MIDI sequencers allow users to edit note numbers in a text format, where they may show up as decimal or hexadecimal values.
