By popular demand, Paul Reed Smith Guitars has announced the Special, a new model that featuresa mahogany body with maple top — but with the humbucker/single-coil/humbucker pickup configuration and electronics of the last-generation Swamp Ash Special. (The new SAS has the great-sounding NF — Narrowfield — PRS pickups.) Other features include the traditional 25-inch PRS scale length, rosewood fretboard on a mahogany neck, 22 frets, bird inlays, the PRS tremolo bridge, a 5-way blade switch, volume and tone controls (with push/pull tone control for splitting the humbuckers), and more. The pickups used are PRS 245 humbuckers and a Lindy Fralin single-coil in the middle. Options include a 10-Top, gold hardware, and a wide-fat neck profile.
