Motif

A melodic or rhythmic musical unit that reappears throughout a composition, either in its original form or at a different pitch, sometimes with altered intervals. Many composers make good use of this technique, however Beethoven and Bach were two well-known examples who were particularly fond of using motifs as unifying elements in their works. (Think of the opening of Beethoven’s famous 5th Symphony….)
