Last time we talked about interesting ways to treat drums with the PSA-1, and this time we’ll delve into using the PSA-1 as an effect on vocals. The PSA-1 was great for mimicking the megaphone-into-the-mic trick that has been popular in recent years. To create this effect on a male vocalist, insert the PSA-1 and use the Pre Amp control (which we found yielded more musical results than the Drive control on voice) to add some harmonic distortion. We ended up at around 3:00. We then added some low-frequency distortion with the Buzz control, ending up at around 2:00. Everything else was left at its default position. These are the settings that worked best for our vocal track, but the PSA-1 offers plenty of sound-shaping options. Feel free to experiment with the EQ sections and gain stages to find unique sounds. As we discussed in the PSA-1 drum tech tip, automating the controls on the PSA-1 can be a great way to add excitement to a vocal track. Using the same reggae song that we used for drums, we automated the Pre Amp control to just past 12:00 so that the end of every lyric line had a hint of distortion, resulting in a cool effect.
