As a follow up to yesterday’s Tech Tip on amplifier/speaker wiring arrangements we have one more permutation that may be of benefit to some. In a situation where you have more than one amplifier in use there is another solution to help maximize efficiency. Let’s say you have a bi-amped PA system running in stereo. Here you have four amplifier channels, and most likely two amps. Instead of using one amp to drive the lows and the other to handle the mid/high cabinets you should mix them up. For example: Use the left side of one amp to drive the low frequencies of the left channel, but use it’s other channel to drive the mid/high frequencies of the right channel. If you combine this technique with the polarity reversing technique explained yesterday you’ll get maximum efficiency from your amps. Even if you PA is mono, but uses more than one amp channel per frequency range you can get more out of it by mixing them up in this way.
