An inSync reader sent us an added tidbit of information about phantom power with microphones in response to a recent inSync Tech Tip (1/13/99).
“Just a quick note about your discussion of phantom power. As an added bit of info, phantom power can in fact cause problems with some tube condenser mics with seperate power supplies. I don’t have any kind of exhaustive list, but I know is does cause malfunctioning of my AKG C-24, and I’ve heard this is a common problem.”
Editor’s note: There are some very old microphones out there that will react strangely to phantom power. Anything built in the last 20 or 25 years should be fine though. If you have an old classic microphone it would be prudent to check with the manufacturer before proceeding.
