Hearkening way back to our July 3 Technical Tip about parking drives, inSync reader Dave H adds the following clarification in regards to our remark about hard drives not needing to be parked these days:
“It is true that in the olden days you had to execute a “PARK” command on your hard drive before turning your system off (you could crash your drive without even moving it!). However, the reason you don’t have to do it any more is because all drives today have an “autopark” routine built into them that moves the heads away from the platters when the power is removed. Your info implied that parking was not required anymore. It is, but the drives do it all by themselves now.”
