More Headroom

Many of us have switched over to smaller tube guitar amps (15-30 watts) for the more compact size, portability, lighter weight, and more manageable volume levels. But some of these amps (particularly the single-channel variety) may not have the clean headroom a player desires.

If you’re having trouble getting enough clean headroom — or to reduce the gain of any tube amp — consider swapping a 12at7 or 12au7 preamp tube for one or more of the 12ax7 tubes that are residing in the preamp of your amp. The lower gain factor of the 12at7 or 12au7 will provide extra headroom and lower the amount of gain produced by the preamp section of the amp.
