In response to our recent tip on tape head demagnetization (12/21/98), inSync reader Larry M asks:
“In the spirit of no question is too dumb, I submit the following: I have a TEAC head demagnetizer that I use on a cassette recorder. I read the article saying that the demagnetizer should never touch the heads. This demagnetizer has a plastic hood over the end of the metal demagnetizing bar. I’ve been leaving this hood on and allowing the plastic to touch the heads. Is that OK? Also, what do you think of the Radio Shack demagnetizing cassettes?”
Okay, first, there ARE questions that are too dumb. This just doesn’t happen to be one. But seriously, most demagnetizers have a covering over their metal. This is to stop you from ruining the head by accidentally touching it with the highly energized metal bar while demagnetizing. You probably aren’t hurting the head by letting the plastic touch it, but I still wouldn’t do it. Nothing should touch your heads besides the tape, cleaning solution, and air. Heads are pretty durable these days, but it is still best to leave them alone. As for the demagnetizing tapes, I don’t like them. I guess they are a decent solution for someone who isn’t comfortable doing it the proper way, but I’ve seen really mixed and inconsistent results from them.
