Louder Sound Without Compression

Want to make a mix seem louder without resorting to heavy compression or limiting? One trick is to try adding some boost around 2kHz. This is the frequency range where our ears are most sensitive, so pushing the level here will make the entire thing seem louder to us. This is also where electric guitar, drum transients, and other impactful sound sources live.

Careful, though. If you overdo it, the mix may become harsh and/or thin sounding.
