Live Mixing: Studio EQ Versus Live EQ

In one sense, EQing is EQing. If you’re familiar with the process of scanning for frequencies using an equalizer and boosting and cutting in the studio, the mechanics are the same when using an equalizer in a live venue. But the use of EQ in those two situations is often completely different. In the studio, very often you’re using EQ to add color to a track, and to help the track fit into a song texturally. Live, you’re almost always using EQ to fix problems — either instruments are competing in the same frequency range, or an instrument is too muddy or boomy in one frequency or another.

Certainly, EQ can be used to correct problematic source material in the studio as well, but in the studio, it’s far easier to fix it at the source before recording. That’s not usually an option live.
