Most of us settle on one DAW that becomes our go-to “DAW of choice.” However, there are reasons why you might use multiple DAWs. Maybe different members of your band use different DAWs and you need to be able to be fluent on all of them. Maybe you compose or write songs at home, but the studio you record in uses a different one for tracking and mixing.
One way to make switching DAWs a little easier is to use the assignable keyboard command facilities in all modern DAWs to configure similar functions in each application to use the same command. For example, you could assign the “New Track” function to the same key command in both PreSonus Studio One and Avid Pro Tools. Or configure the “Zoom” functions in MOTU Digital Performer to the same key commands as are used in Steinberg Cubase. This way, you don’t have to remember multiple key commands for the same functions, or end up mousing to the menu items instead of using key commands.
If you set similar key commands in multiple apps for all your most-used functions, you’ll find switching between DAWs much more intuitive.
