Twenty One Pilots drummer Josh Dun recently invited Sweetwater into his incredible home studio. While Josh is known primarily for his drum chops, he crafted a multifaceted space that satisfies his many creative pursuits, including cutting demos, podcasting, and ADR (automated dialogue replacement) for video. Josh and Neat Audio’s TJ Bechill went through every facet of this inspiring space, including a comprehensive look at Josh’s carefully selected gear choices. Read on to see the gear that powers Josh Dun’s epic home studio!
Interface
Josh opted for the Lynx Aurora (n) 24-TB Thunderbolt 3 for his audio interface. This 24-channel AD/DA converter boasts exceptional sound quality and plenty of IO for integrating Josh’s outboard gear.
Monitors
You can’t have an epic home studio without an epic set of studio monitors! And Josh’s monitors are epic indeed: a pair of PMC 6-2 active studio monitors with a PMC 8 subwoofer — routed through a Grace Design m905-BK monitor control system.
Outboard Gear
Josh’s studio is streamlined, but it’s full of analog vibe. Josh selected an enviable collection of hardware preamps and compressors from some of the industry’s biggest names, including Rupert Neve Designs, API, BAE, Universal Audio, and Chandler Limited, to capture incredible recordings.
Microphones
It should be no surprise that Josh’s mic locker is built around several renowned drum recording microphones. But he’s padded them with several studio workhorses that ensure he’s covered no matter what source he’s capturing!
Microphone Stands
Josh enjoys the flexibility and versatility of Triad-Orbit stands and fixtures for mic stands. They keep his sightlines clean and his mics stable!
Keyboard Controller
Josh embraces hardware and software in the studio, and for controlling his library of soft synths and virtual instruments, he uses an Arturia Keylab 61-key MIDI controller, one of the most reliable and popular controllers around!
Kemper Profiler
In modern studios, modeling amps are a mainstay, and Josh’s studio is no different! For all things guitar, Josh’s go-to is a Kemper Profiler rackmount amp head. With the Kemper, Josh can access limitless guitar and bass amp tones.
Additional Gear
Rounding out Josh’s studio are power conditioners and patchbays to keep the audio noise-free and streamline signal routing.
