Isorhythm

A pattern of pitches and repeating rhythms. The term originated in 1904, in a description of the compositional technique used in 13-century motets. Isorhythms are also found in 14th and 15th century compositions, the music of India, 20th century classical music, such as minimalist compositions in the 1960s. Step sequencers can be somewhat classed as isorhythmic devices, combining a repeating pitch pattern with a repeating rhythmic pattern.
