Short for File Transfer Protocol, FTP is the protocol used on the Internet for exchanging files. FTP is a client-server protocol that allows a user on one computer to transfer files to and from another computer over a TCP/IP network. FTP is most commonly used, however, to allow potentially large numbers of users to download a file or files from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server (e.g., uploading a Web page file to a server).
