Pronounced eye-pee, it is an abbreviation for Internet Protocol. IP is a standard for transmitting data across networks of computing devices. It specifies the format of the packets (blocks of data) and addressing scheme to be used with each device attached to such a network. When you attach a computing device to a network it must have an IP address assigned to it in order to be able to receive and send information.
