A bass guitar (acoustic or electric) that does not use frets to define pitch on the fingerboard, similar to a violin, cello, or upright bass. The lack of frets allows the player to manipulate pitch using a variety of techniques. It can also result in a different tone from a fretted bass; with a softer attack, more singing sustain, and depending on the instrument setup and type, a growling, warm character.
