An instrument with strings tuned E, A, D, G — one octave lower than the first four strings of a traditional 6-string guitar. Though bass guitars traditionally have four strings, a bass guitar may have 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or more discretely pitched strings, as well as 8 or 12 strings that are tuned in octave pairs as on a 12-string guitar. A bass guitar usually has frets, but fretless variations are also available.
