Avid has unveiled the latest version of Pro Tools, v12.6, which will be released later this month. I had an opportunity to sit down for a hands-on “sneak peek” at some of the new features in the new version. There are a number of very useful new features that provide improvements, particularly to workflow.
Clip Effects
(Pro Tools HD only)
One of the biggest new features is a brand-new plug-in format in Pro Tools that supports applying real-time processing on a per-clip basis. Currently, channel-strip-style processing is available, but expect more plug-ins to come in the future. Being able to process each clip separately gives you tremendous flexibility for controlling dynamics, applying corrective EQ and filtering effects, without having to resort to separating clips onto multiple tracks — each with its own set of plug-ins — or using automation to change settings on plug-ins. Certainly this will be big for post work, but I see many applications for music production as well.
Playlist Enhancements
Pro Tools v12.6 includes a number of new ways to manage playlists. First, there is now an indicator “light” that shows when a track contains more than one playlist — surprisingly useful. One of my favorite new features is a key command that allows you to change the active playlist without having to open up playlist view on a track. This makes it very fast and easy to audition playlists. A new mode allows sending fully overlapped clips to a new or existing playlist.
Task Manager
The Edit window now includes an activity indicator for the Task Manager.
Freeze Improvements
Freeze has become a favorite feature for me, freeing up computer resources and helping manage tracks. PT 12.6 includes a new Freeze Status Icon in the Edit window to show if tracks are frozen within a session. You can also now globally freeze and unfreeze tracks, as well as choose a type of track (instrument track, for example) and freeze all of those globally while not freezing other types of tracks.
Real-time Fade Manipulation
The Smart Tool can now be used to grab fades (in, out, and crossfade) and instantly adjust them, with real-time waveform updates showing the results of the adjustment. A new right-click menu for fades allows you to adjust the shape and slope of the fade quickly and easily.
Improved Dubbing Workflows
(Pro Tools HDX only)
Single-system re-recorder workflows support improved in-the-box post dubbing without latency or glitches when punching in and out or input monitor toggling on cascaded record tracks.
And More!
Of course, Pro Tools v12.6 also includes stability enhancements and bug fixes as well!
All in all, Pro Tools 12.6 represents yet another step forward for Pro Tools. The enhancements are all practical, user-requested features that make working in Pro Tools even more streamlined and efficient.
