Feedback and Hollowbodies

Q: Is there a certain type of hollowbody guitar construction that will feed back less than another?

A: Any hollowbody will be more prone to feeding back than a solidbody or semi-hollowbody. These characteristics may help reduce feedback slightly:

  • Mounting the pickups and controls to the body (as on a solidbody) rather than having the pickup “float” off the end of the fingerboard and the controls on the pickguard.

  • A laminate top will generally feed back less than a solid top.
  • A pressed top will generally feed back less than a carved top.
  • A shallower body depth will generally feed back less than a deeper body.

Of course, these differences will also result in different guitar tones, so there are tradeoffs.
