Even more on PACE copy-protection and Mac OS8
inSync reader Earl V. forwarded us the following message he received from the developer of PACE:
| "The only problem we are aware of is that some applications protected with earlier versions of PACE protection (i.e. PACE III) will crash on installation. This crash happens when applications protected with our compression option are expanded. The bug has to do with register usage under Mac OS8 and we are working with Apple to resolve the problem. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t discover this problem earlier. However we did inform our customer base early this year that PACE III was no longer being supported. As a result, we concentrated our testing resources on InterLok and did only minimal testing of PACE III under OS8. Applications protected with InterLok (including ProTools 4.0.1) work fine under OS8." |
And from Mark Gavini, Apple’s Digital Audio/Games/MIDI evangelist:
| "The only programs that we have found to have problems (and these are being addressed as I type this) are SD II and Cubase VST. Apparently these two apps use an older version of the PACE system and can crash during installation. Software that uses the newer PACE implementation – such as ProTools III, Opcode Apps, PEAK from BIAS, etc. do not seem to exhibit this problem. I don’t believe that there would be an issue upgrading an existing system to Mac OS8 since the problem crops up during installation only." |
