Also called keyboard rate scaling. This function changes the length of one or more envelope segments, depending on which key or note on a keyboard is being played. Envelope tracking is most commonly used to give shorter envelope segments to higher notes, while lower notes get longer segments. This is most commonly used to reproduce the response characteristics of percussion-activated acoustic instruments such as the grand piano, in which lower notes decay much slower than higher notes.
