“I know audio takes 5 MB per track minute on a hard drive. How much does digital video take?”
16-bit, 44.1 kHz audio does take 5 MB per minute per track on a hard drive. However, other audio rates take different amounts. When you move up to 24-bit audio or raise the sampling rate you will use more hard drive space. Digital video works the same way, only there are even more factors that go into how much space is used. Not only do you have multiple capture resolutions, but you also have several different compression schemes that may be used. On top of that you still have the audio to think about (assuming you wish to capture audio with your video), which can have different capture (sample) rates. It’s hard to nail down a specific number until you know all this info. If you are just looking for a range, or semi worst case scenario you can figure about 3.5 MB per second for high quality video. This may not sound like that much, but remember that translates to 35 MB every 10 seconds, or 210 MB per minute, or 2.1 gig every 10 minutes, or…you get the idea. Most applications that capture video will give you an idea of how much space is required for a given capture resolution.
