Q: I’m installing Auralex acoustic foam in my studio, and need to cut some pieces to fit various places. What’s the best tool for cutting it?
A: It depends on the cut you’re making, and where the foam will end up. If you won’t see the cut edge (it will be against a wall corner, another piece of foam, etc.) then you can use anything from a razor utility knife, to a very sharp, very fine-toothed saw, to an electric carving knife, to a large pair of scissors.
For the cleanest cuts, where you will see the edge, we’ve found that an electric carving knife or a large pair of very sharp scissors can do the job well.
Take your time, measure twice, let the scissors or knife do the work — don’t force it or muscle it through the foam, cut slowly and gently to prevent pulling the foam out of shape while you cut, and you can achieve professional-looking results without difficulty.
