Control Cavity

An opening routed into the back of an electric guitar or bass to provide space for the instrument’s internal electronics, switching, and volume and tone controls. A control cavity can be routed into the back of the guitar or bass, in which case it is usually covered by a plastic or wooden plate, or may be routed into the top/front of the guitar or bass, in which case it is usually covered by the instrument’s pickguard.
