Compensated Nut

A guitar string nut where the leading edge (the fretboard side) of the nut is recessed by a certain amount for particular strings in order to improve the intonation of that string. On a “standard” nut, the strings all cross the nut at the same distance from the first fret; by adjusting this distance for each string with a compensated nut, the guitar will play more in tune. Several companies have explored and used compensated nuts; Music Man is one example that is currently using compensated nuts.
