One of the more enlightening bits of info in our new blue & white G3 technical page mentioned above in today’s inSync comes from Glyph Technologies, the hard drive people. Common wisdom has been that any non Ultra Wide SCSI device placed on an Ultra Wide SCSI bus will cause the whole bus to slow down to the speed of the slowest device. Consequently it has been necessary to have more than one SCSI bus to accommodate different types of SCSI drives. Since the new blue & white G3’s do not have built in SCSI this means buying PCI cards and using up slots in the machine. Glyph has informed us that their High-9 active terminator solves this problem. It connects to the Ultra SCSI bus and provides a regular 50 pin Centronics pass through to normal SCSI devices. Placing it on your last Ultra Wide device in the chain properly terminates the ‘hanging’ pins on the 68 pin external port and allows you to chain 50 pin Centronics devices without degrading the performance of the Ultra Wide bus. This means you can hang CD burners, Jaz, and Zip drives off of the end of your Ultra Wide bus and save your PCI slots for your audio hardware. Since PC computers have never had built in SCSI the High-9 adapter should serve that platform equally well. Thank you Glyph.
