Also called a “clamping caul” this refers to a press that is used in woodworking and other manufacturing processes to distribute and direct clamping force. The surface of the press makes contact with a panel or other such part, such as a plate or sheet. Clamping cauls are used in holding pieces of a guitar together while the wood glue sets and dries, for example clamping a fretboard to a neck during assembly.
