CAGED System

A system for playing notes up and down the guitar fretboard by memorizing fingering positions for these specific chords: C, A, G, E, and D. You can play any chord higher up on the fretboard by playing the next shape in the sequence. The lowest notes of of the desired shape will always overlap with the previous shape. For example, if you play an “A” chord in a different location than an open A, you could use the “G” chord shape (the next shape in the sequence). To do this, you would build the G chord shape at the fret of the A chord on the 6th string (the 5th fret in standard tuning).
