In musical notation, measures are separated by vertical lines known as bar lines, or bars, for short. Measures are sometimes referred to as bars: since each bar line denotes a new measure of music, their counts increment through a piece identically. When a musician says, “pick it up at the 16th measure,” he or she could just as easily say, “…16th bar.”
