“I’ve been using the Disc Burner software that came with my new Mac for archiving data to CD. Recently, after a series of backups, I noticed my available hard drive space was growing smaller, yet I’ve created no new files. I’ve only burned discs. What’s up?”
When you put a blank disc in the Mac and initialize it there are two (common) ways to initiate the burn. If you are dragging your Disc Burner CD icon on your desktop to the trash in order to generate the “Would you like to burn disk” message it seems Disc Burner creates a backup image of the data to be burned in your Preferences folder in the System Folder. At a rate of hundreds of megabytes per disc this can eat up hard disk space quickly. Instead, simply highlight the CD icon by clicking on it once, go under the “Special” Menu in the menu bar at the top of the desktop and you will see “Burn CD.” Use this method and you’ll avoid having those images created. Of course you can always just go back and delete them later if you wish to do it the other way.
