The prestigious education/notation software company, Sibelius, is the latest acquisition by Avid Technology, the parent company of such music technology giants as Digidesign and M-Audio. A spokesperson for Avid announced that they have purchased Sibelius for an estimated $23 million and that plans are already under way to offer exclusive product bundles of the highly acclaimed scoring software with Digidesign Pro Tools systems. The expectation is to take advantage of Sibelius’ strong presence in the educational marketplace to distribute their other signature products to a much wider audience. Your guess is as good as ours as to whether Sibelius’ scoring capabilities will be integrated into future versions of Pro Tools, but we’re hoping, and will bring you any news we hear.
