Every mic has a voice, an inherent sound that’s a combination of the design, the diaphragm, the circuitry, and how it interacts with a preamp. Whether it’s a strong response in the upper mids that lets a snare cut through or airiness that sweetens a vocal, a mic’s voice is what causes us to reach for it time and time again. Always innovating, our friends at Aston Microphones have a unique plan as they launch their upcoming Element microphone: they’re letting you help shape its sound.
How Project Element Works
Project Element is Aston’s innovative idea for deciding how the Element will sound. Aston is recording different prototype stages of the Element and putting those sound files online for you to audition. And they’ll offer them against a variety of industry-standard mics of similar ilk and let you compare the two. You can go to the voting page, listen to the samples, and then vote for the mic you think sounds best on each sound source. The audio files are randomized so you won’t know which mic or which Element version you’re hearing. There are multiple rounds of voting, and as each round closes, the Element prototype will be tweaked based on the feedback. The end result is what can be referred to as the first microphone with a crowd-sourced voicing, and you — the end user — had a say in how the mic will sound. Pretty cool, huh?
