Both the Fender Stratocaster and the Telecaster (along with the single-pickup version, the Esquire) originally came with metal bridge covers. These were affectionately called “ashtrays” because, well, that’s what they looked like. Most players removed them immediately, as they made palm-muting impossible. Finding a vintage Strat or Tele with the original ashtray cover is rare indeed!
