The Digital MPA is a great sounding preamp made by the folks at ART (Applied Research and Technology).
The Digital MPA is a two channel mic-pre that offers sampling rates from 44.1k to 96k. It comes with two large VU meters, mic/line inputs, digital outputs such as AES/EBU, and Optical S/PDIF or ADAT.
In my experience with the Digital MPA, I have found it to be very useful especially with microphones that need a lot of power. I have a Digidesign Mbox at home, and the mic-pre’s on it sound great, but weren’t intended to push certain microphones such as ribbon mics. The Digital MPA is perfect for microphones that need a lot of power, like ribbon mics, because it has a wide amount of gain available. I have used it with the Royer SF-12 and the results were amazing; huge, big warm sound. And, because it features digital I/O, it is the perfect front end for a DAW owner who wants to keep things in the digital domain. Plus, who wouldn’t want an additional good preamp without robbing the bank? All in all, one cannot go wrong with the Digital MPA from ART!
