Between the Buried and Me | Artist Profile

Welcome to Between the Buried and Me’s Artist Profile

Prog. Tech. Death. Melodic. Avante-garde. These shades of metal are merely the foundation of Between the Buried and Me’s discography. Everything from math rock and bluegrass to hardcore punk and jazz swirl throughout the band’s constellation of influences, augmented by their methodical yet malleable menagerie of musical pursuits.

Across multiple pairs of record sequels, a who’s-who of ’80s and ’90s rock royalty via the band’s The Anatomy Of cover album, and a penchant for technicality that rivals the most-ambitious sound design ventures, Between the Buried and Me has married intuition and exploration with ceaseless curiosity and a refusal to let the nominal determinism of genres cage their sound — we’re more than 25 years into their explosive output.

Keep up with Between the Buried and Me and their artist profile, including signature and essential studio-to-stage gear, the latest content, new releases, upcoming shows, exclusive opportunities, and more!

Between the Buried and Me Signature Gear & Studio-to-Stage Essentials

With their multidimensional mélange of diabolical death metal-derived delights, Between the Buried and Me’s Paul Waggoner, Dan Briggs, Blake Richardson, and Tommy Rogers wield an immense arsenal to translate their incendiary aural augury into studio-to-stage sonic firepower.

Tommy Rogers: Lead Vocals and Keyboards

Juggling lead vocal duties that run the gamut of crooning falsetto and serenading cleans to searing screams and galvanizing growls with kaleidoscopic keys is no small feat. And at the esoteric intersections of progressive, technical, and death metal, Between the Buried and Me’s avant garde oeuvre continues to challenge, intrigue, and excite, with co-founder Tommy Rogers at the helm. Check out his essential live and studio gear, and learn more about Tommy’s unique deployment of the Neural DSP Quad Cortex in his hybrid keyboard-vocal rig!

Between the Buried and Me’s lead vocalist relies on the Quad Cortex for live vocal effects. Distortions, reverbs, telephone-style processing, and megaphone-like presence — Tommy’s on-stage vocal delivery is every bit as polychromic as the band’s catalog. Speaking about this arrangement, Tommy prefers the hands-on control this affords him, rather than relegating sound shaping duties to the front-of-house crew or elsewhere.

Recording, writing, and rehearsing at home are imperative solo ventures for each member of BTBAM — something that maximizes their individual and collective capacities for bringing exploratory and innovative perspectives to each record. For Tommy, Audix is the cornerstone of his studio setup, in addition to the powerhouse playback of his ADAM Audio D3V studio monitors.

Blake Richardson: Drums

Powered by Tama, Sabian, sE Electronics, Remo, Vic Firth, and more, drummer Blake Richardson’s brace of brutality drives BTBAM’s rhythm section, night after night, show after show. Click into each photo to dive deep into Blake’s gear!

In addition to these road-grade rhythm tools, Blake’s penchant for premier performances extends to his Tama Metalworks and Starphonic Brass snares, with critical stage and studio processing held down via Universal Audio, Warm Audio, and API.

Paul Waggoner: Guitar

Dan Briggs: Bass and Keyboards
