The upper bout is the upper, curve of a guitar where it bends outward. In acoustic guitars it includes the sound hole. You could consider the upper bout the “shoulders” of the guitar, and often is has a cutaway for easier fret access while playing. Some electric guitar styles feature two cutaways in the upper bout, one on each side of the neck where it joins the body.
