Paul Adelburt Bigsby (1899-1968) was the designer of the Bigsby Tremolo Tailpiece. He also designed instruments—including a custom electric guitar for Merle Travis that anchored the strings in the body instead of on the tailpiece. This early electric guitar is thought to be one of the influences on Leo Fender when designing his iconic Esquire a few years later.
