A semi-modular synthesizer is conceptually similar to a modular synthesizer; however, it is a generally hard-wired collection of modules from a single manufacturer that makes a cohesive product. Modules may not be swapped out and the most common/useful configurations are often pre-wired. However, the manufacturer provides mechanisms, such as patch cables or switching, to allow the user to connect modules in different orders.
